The LTHL paused before tonight's games to remember the South Side's
Barry Daniels, a 49-year-old table hockey enthusiast who died the
previous Tuesday from a heart attack while playing basketball against a
team of paramedics and firefighters. Barry mostly played Coleco in the
CTHL, but wasn't afraid to come out to Lemont ahd play Stiga from time
to time. Gerald Pytlewski was nice enough to put together a
mini-memorial of Barry that players looked at in between games.
Afterward, we cranked it up to play two rounds of 12 games each in less
than five hours. Marathon training. Fourteen players showed up, but one
left early and another showed up late, so it was 13 players in each
round robin. A newcomer was longtime Lemont resident Sam Gargano. Nice
to have Sam there. Taking top honors was Ron Marsik, who won 21 of his
24 games, losing only to Lemont's Jim Rzonca and third-place finisher
Jeff Thill. I believe latecomer Dan Lord got the tie against Ron, who
lodged an amazing nine shutouts, giving up 25 goals in 24 games total.
Chargo played well, going 18-4-2, with Jeff Thill really breaking out
with a dominating first round and 15-4-5 record on the evening.
Aurora's Jeff Farwell continued to play well, going 14-7-3. Lemont's
Garry Butler had a strong first round but cooled somewhat in the second
round, going 11-10-3. Homer Glen's Eric Krol had a frustrating evening,
playing very well against top players like Chargo and Jeff Thill (tying
each of them) and even defeating Rzonca once, but losing other games to
players who finished lower on the evening than he did. We're off next
week as Rich Thill's Coleco league in South Holland kicks off, but
return Jan. 22 in Lemont.
Three Stars of the night
1. Ron Marsik...amazing defense and can still find the net on O.
2. Jeff Thill...made a statement with breakout night.
3. Jeff Farwell...continuing to improve at Stiga.
